The lore of mermaids and mermen is real! As Gretchen McNeil, author of Possess, says, "Riveting! A cold-blooded tale of secrets, revenge, and forbidden love that will leave you terrified to go in the water."

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans and absorb their positive energy. Usually, they select their victims at random, but this time around, the underwater clan chooses its target for a reason: revenge. They want to kill Jason Hancock, the man they blame for their mother's death.

It's going to take a concerted effort to lure the aquaphobic Hancock onto the water. Calder's job is to gain Hancock's trust by getting close to his family. Relying on his irresistible good looks and charm, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter Lily. Easy enough, but Calder screws everything up by falling in love--just as Lily starts to suspect there's more to the monster-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined, and just as the mermaids threaten to take matters into their own hands, forcing Calder to choose between them and the girl he loves.

One thing's for sure: whatever Calder decides, the outcome won't be pretty.

My Review:

Favorite quote

“But it seemed I had fallen for a human – and not just any human, the worst possible human out of all seven billion possibilities.”

This is my first try at a mermaid book and it was good! Eeevil mermaids, but still, I liked it a lot.

Calder is a merman. Gifted with good looks and easy charm, he can effortlessly prey on young naive girls and feed on their energy to survive. Leaving his older sisters, he wanders alone by the islands and the oceans watching for his next victims, but things weren’t at their best. Many years ago, his mother was brutally killed by a human and now, only taking his life will quench the fire of revenge in their hearts. Or so his sisters keep telling him. He knows that something doesn’t feel right, especially when they try to find him and inform him of the plan they had in mind.

He is totally messed up and confused, he doesn’t know what to follow, his heart or his mind; too blinded by claiming their revenge, his loyalty to his sisters and the strong bond they had, his heartbreak over his mother’s death… he couldn’t see the wrongness of the plan they concocted and his part in it, until he met the target: Lily, the grand-daughter of the murderer and got to know her and then started falling for her.

My impressions:

Best parts: when Calder was wrestling with the dueling loyalties: the promise they kept to their mother, or his newfound love for Lily.

It was at first very creepy the way he was stalking her non-stop, it felt like reading Midnight Sun and being in Edward Cullen’s head, and let me tell you that’s not pleasant. Not. One. Bit.
But as the story progressed, and Calder let go of the pull his sisters had on him, he became more human, more sensitive, his feelings for Lily made him a better man.

Impala baby! God! how I love that car, and it was a nice add, I couldn’t help but feel some Supernatural touch in the story, is the author a fan of the show? Or am I an overly obsessed fangirl? I’m curious about both.

Some things made me cringe; like Tallulah’s feelings for Calder, and Calder’s description of Pavati; but somewhere along the road, the whole thing was explained, and it added another trait to the story, some fear edges and it fed the vengeance plot and made it all interesting by the end.

The romance started in a weird way because of the stalking, but Lily wasn’t a TSTL she was strong and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and tell him that he creeped her out, that he needed to stay away from her. Her stubbornness made him realize that he was doing it wrong, so he changed his attitude and that was pretty awesome.

The ending was a bit shocking and made me grip my quilt with all the suspense and the revelations; the story took a complete turn and I started seeing the previous events from another angle. I am eager now to read book 2 !

My Review:

What an amazing book! Hilarious, jam-packed with action, creepy dead people and the creepy guy who raises them, a pack of hybrid werewolves like no other, some witches, a talking-head and the clueless not-so-ordinary guy who finds himself smack in the middle of it all.

Sam, which is short for Samhain Corvus LaCroix (yes, that’s his name)

My Review:

God knows how much I ADORE Beauty and the Beast. I remember watching it over and over again with my best friend, and every single time, we were squealing and crying and sighing at the exact same scenes (we were eight-years old mind you). Now, 12 years later, I was very curious about reading a retelling that would do it justice and coming across an critically-acclaimed historical, adult version of the tale I couldn't resist the urge to grab it, could I?

It was one of the purest, tenderest, most breathtaking love stories I've ever read and the historical setting added a sweet intensity to their feelings. Beneath Edward's scarred face, his bad temper and grouchy manners lays a passionate, kind-hearted man looking for the woman who can see past all his defaults and would love him unconditionally. That woman happens to be the widowed Anna, his secretary and a woman who sports scars deep-down her heart. Her love for him goes as far as disguising herself as a courtesan, risking her reputation and her heart just to be in his arms, although she knows that he won't know who she really is and how mad he's going to be if he ever unmasked her.

I don't know if it's pure luck or if simply I have a good taste in books (though, for the sake of my ego, I tend to think that it's the latter) but this is my second historical romance and it was awe-inspiring. I can easily picture it in a movie or better a BBC mini series starring Michael Fassbender...

Waiting on Wednesday (#1)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at "Breaking the Spine", that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

For my first WoW I decided to choose a book that keeps, every time I look it up,   sending shivers of anticipation and making me drool on both the cover and the blurb: THE COLLECTOR: a Dante Walker Novel by Victoria Thomas

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence have made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple, weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal opportunity collector and doesn’t want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within 10 days.  Dante doesn’t know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky, Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect—he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector, and uncover emotions deeply buried.

Well, you can't blame a girl for jumping up and down from excitement just by reading the blurb and those early reviews especially after the cover was revealed... my ovaries exploded.

I mean, look at the guy! he's... phew *fans herself* it really doesn't make it easier, everything about him screams: "BAD BOY! I'M TROUBLE!". I'm a sucker for bad boys who are very bad (not in real life though) and Dante seems the embodiment for the word, and I really wish if it's a New Adult book rather than a YA, a New Adult would preferable for a character like Dante.

Add it to your TBR girls, Dante THE COLLECTOR is coming: March 2013 by Entangled Teen Publisher.

Synopsis from Goodreads

I can’t believe it took me years to read this book and I’m horrified that I passed on this awesomeness by reading crappy books, while Vampire Academy was collecting dust on my shelves for now 3 years.

Honestly, it was one of the most amazing books I’ve read in a long time, it makes all my five-ratings pale in comparison. Since I’m probably the last person on earth that has read the book, I’m going to skip the details about the story.

Book Review: Forgotten by Cat Patrick

Each night at precisely 4:33 am, while sixteen-year-old London Lane is asleep, her memory of that day is erased. In the morning, all she can "remember" are events from her future. London is used to relying on reminder notes and a trusted friend to get through the day, but things get complicated when a new boy at school enters the picture. Luke Henry is not someone you'd easily forget, yet try as she might, London can't find him in her memories of things to come.

When London starts experiencing disturbing flashbacks, or flash-forwards, as the case may be, she realizes it's time to learn about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

This book reminded me a lot of the movie: 50 First Dates, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore but with a more serious tone and a psychodrama twist.

The story of London Lane and her gap memories was now and then very sad and bittersweet; she remembers the future the way we remember the past, and as for her past, you can say that she’s got none at all.
